Yesterday’s Painting

I do have an overall plan for this little body of work, but I never know really where each painting will go, once I get going. Which is, of course, part of the fun of the process.

I do particularly like this one, even if it is a bit blocky. Thinking of the word “fresh” when choosing a palette.

This was sort of a throw-away, trying to use up the mixed paint on my palette from another painting I’m working on this week, and painted on an old unsuccessful canvas from last year, scraped and sanded down. Complete with a bit of moth-wing at around 3 o’clock, 2 inches in.

Painting is Better Than Just About Anything

I haven’t been this happy in about 6 months! Painting is better than just about anything. And I’m pretty happy with everything else, yet almost all the rest of it just does NOT compare!

I survived my annual major existential crisis in the studio Sunday night. Yes, I could — and did — finally get back into my studio. Yay!

With the help of lots of looking and reading art stuff, I decided to try again to begin a small daily painting routine. This time, I may focus primarily on color relationships and the shape of colors (ala Patrick Heron’s 1975 essays: “Color is Paint” and “Brushwork is Spatial” in the volume “The Colour of Colour”). I was thinking of much more while working on this. Who knows what other things may enter into my thinking/creating process?

Oh, yeah, and I switched back to oils from acrylics. YES! Luscious, luscious oils. Here’s the first one, perhaps overconfidently titled “Daily Painting 2014-001.”

Finally, a New Painting!

It seems that there will just be times when life gets in the way of creativity.  🙁

My past two months have been full of all kinds of activity — too little of which has been painting, but I finally cleared out my schedule and the studio enough on Sunday to get back in there and paint, and man, does it feel good.

The painting I spent the most time working on Sunday afternoon is still a mess.  I think perhaps some canvases are just cursed, as that one has been ~20 different paintings over the past few months, and I’ve not been happy with any of them!

This one, on the other hand, came together fairly quickly and directly.  I may do a tad more to it; haven’t decided yet, but I can say I’m fairly happy with most parts of it, and with the whole.  Yay!

Love This One!

Aren’t those colors just yummy? I’d like to see what would happen if I tried to paint something like this very large.

New Painting: “Composition #6, 2013”

I’m finally posting this small one in my latest series. I’ve thought it was done several times before, and then decided to change something else. I’m posting it here now as possibly done, though I may still decide to change something else.
